Labour's so-called "star chamber" meets for the first time today to consider the fate of three of the party's MPs in the wake of the expenses scandal.

Margaret Moran, Ian Gibson and Elliot Morley could all be asked to stand down at the next election over their claims.

The "star chamber" is a panel of three senior National Executive Committee members which was set up by Gordon Brown following revelations about expenses.

Ms Moran, the MP for Luton, spent £22,500 of taxpayers' money on treating dry rot at a property 100 miles from her constituency.

While Mr Gibson, MP for Norwich North, claimed £80,000 in taxpayers' money for a flat where his daughter lived with her partner.

And Mr Morley, a former minister, claimed £16,000 for a mortgage had paid off. He has already been suspended from the parliamentary party.

Labour would not disclose whether any of them are expected to face the panel in person.

The case of a fourth MP, David Chaytor, will be considered at a later date.

The "star chamber" will meet as more revelations about expenses continue to emerge.

In its latest report, the Daily Telegraph says a Tory MP claimed £500 for plants and £1,900 for redecorating his second home which he sold for a £280,000 profit.

John Greenway also claimed for a 59p box of matches, two boxes of firelighters worth 99p each, four bags of compost, a trellis and plant food for the London property.

The newspaper says the Ryedale MP spent more than £3,500 on household goods and furnishings, including redecorating bills, a £399 flat screen television set and crockery from Habitat.

Mr Greenway was reported to have bought the house in south London with his wife Sylvia for £211,000.

Shortly after the redecoration and investment in his garden, they sold it for £493,000 in September 2006.

The issue over MPs expenses has encouraged a couple of celebrities to explore the idea of standing as an MP on a 'no sleaze' ticket.

Two of the possible candidates Esther Rantzen and Joanna Lumley seem to have a degree of credibility in the eyes of the electorate.  But the scandal has attracted some of the most bizarre celebrities as well.

Former pop star and I'm A Celebrity contestant David Van Day has said that he is 85% certain to stand as MP over the expense scandal.

Day - a member of 80s pop duo Dollar - may put himself forward as a candidate against Mid Bedfordshire MP Nadine Dorries.

The Conservative MP has been caught up in the furore over expenses.

It was alleged she claimed for a New Year's Eve hotel room and a second home allowance while only having one home.

Where will it all end?
