For the past 45 years Asian doctors have provided the back-bone of the NHS, caring for white working class communities in some of the most deprived parts of the United Kingdom. Today, in addition to many Afro-Caribbean and African NHS workers, a quarter of Britain's NHS staff are Asian, largely thanks to a scheme launched in the early 1960s by the Tory anti-immigrant politician Enoch Powell, to fill shortages of NHS staff with migrants from Britain's former colonies! Racists like Nick Griffin and the BNP constantly misrepresent the legacy of the British Empire. As for Enoch Powell himself, nothing shows the hypocrisy and cynicism of Powell's "Rivers of Blood" speech more than Powell's own contribution to the growth of the NHS - the irony being that if rivers of blood had run through Britain, it would have been black and Asian NHS workers who would have helped clean up the mess!

Now, you hear the BNP, the NF and all them other right wing dicks go on about Enoch Powell, you would think that at some point he had surported them in some way. But just like Griffins atemp at hi-jacting the image of Churchill, this is way off the mark. Enoch Powell was a Conserervative MP for Wloverhampton Southwest from 1950, the year he entered Westminster to February 1974, when he lost the seat, mostly due to boundry changes. He returned to Westminster in October 1974 as MP for the Nothern Irish seat of South Down witch he held untill he list it in the general elction of 1987.

My "other half" hasn't always enjoyed robust good health, and that he's still with us is down to a multi-national taskforce of doctors, heart surgeons and stroke rehab specialists from all over the UK and Ireland, plus Iran, Malawi, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Syria. The nursing staff have been from many other nations, and his remaining teeth owe their sparkle to a Polish lady dentist.
