Stoke-on-Trent City Council has purchased the historic Spode pottery site as part of plans to transform Stoke Town. The former pottery site, which has remained empty since the company went into administration in 2008 - although the historic Spode brand is once again being produced in the town by Portmeirion Group - will now be brought back in to use as regeneration plans for Stoke Town get under way. Councillor Mohammed Pervez, leader of the city council, said:

Nearly 200 athletes from across the West Midlands will be competing in the North Staffordshire Special Olympics Regional Athletics Competition this weekend. Taking place on Saturday 17 July from 10am -5pm at Northwood Stadium, the event features some of the best Special Olympians from across the region as they compete in athletic disciplines including sprinting, 100m, 200m, 300m, pentathlon, long jump, softball throw and shot-put.

A Stoke-on-Trent children’s centre has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award, after a parent who uses the facilities put forward the original nomination. Crescent Children’s Centre in Meir has been selected for a place in the final of the 4Children National Children’s Star Awards, beating off competition from hundreds of other entrants. The centre reached the final after the original nomination came from a parent who uses the facilities

After a review of charges for sports and leisure including allotments Stoke-on-Trent city council cabinet is expected to agree at the council cabinet meeting on 23 June a nominal increase in charges to help make the services more sustainable for the future. The average increases proposed are: Sports and leisure excluding Stoke-on-Trent Gymnastics Centre – 7% Stoke-on-Trent Gymnastics Centre – 15% Sports Development – 4.6% Outdoor Sports Pitch Service – 5% Energise Plus – 5%

Stoke-on-Trent City Councillors are to be asked to support an application which would see the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery and its collections of ceramics gain national accreditation. Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s cabinet will this month (23 June) be recommended to support the application which is to be made to the national Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).


The newly appointed Cabinet have already decided to extend (not) public scrutiny on there decision making. by cutting the number of meetings of the Cabinet by a quarter, and will be held in the evenings at 6pm so that this part time crew don’t have to have any time off work.

An afternoon of fun and frolics will take place this Friday June 11 at Treehouse Children’s Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. Families, service providers and community members in the Bentilee, Berryhill, Eaton Park, Moss Green and the Bambury Street areas are all invited to attend the event, which takes place from 1:00pm until 4:00pm, at the centre on Dawlish Drive in Bentilee. Although I was one of the three councillors who signed the Call-In of the Cabinet decision to engage consultants at an initial price of some £400,000 to come into the City Council and sort out the mal/administration. As a Member of the Scrutiny Committee considering the call-in I was able to take a more active role than is permitted for the councillor presenting the case for the call-in.
