The winners of a bookmark competition aiming to teach children and young people in the city about staying safe will be presented with their prizes tomorrow (Thursday March 18) at Fenton Manor Sports Centre. The competition, which was open to all schools in the city, challenged pupils to create a bookmark covering the theme of staying safe; one of the five Every Child Matters outcomes.

Deputy Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council Brian Ward has today confirmed that he will stand as an Independent Candidate in the upcoming General Elections Ward, who is a Councillor for the Blurton Ward and is also the Leader of the City Independent Group is currently at a conference in Cannes in France on behalf of the City Council. The principle reason for his decision to enter the contest is that he does not feel that the City's 3 Labour MPs have delivered on behalf of the electorate.

The Cabinet of Stoke-on-Trent City Council today accepted Chief Executive John van de Laarschott's recommendation to cease work towards the Strategic Partnership The partnership would have seen to transferal of up to 900 council staff to a private company that would have been situated in the proposed new Business District in Hanley.

It is coming up to 25 years since the end of the miners strike and there is a special question time event being held at the beginning of next month. I was having a sort out at home and came across a couple of letters I wrote that bought to mind my involvement in the strike at least from the City Council angle and helped to bring to mind a personal memoir of the events of quarter of a century ago.

Its probably not a good idea to write something when you are annoyed; but perhaps there are occasions when you should not allow things to fester and to use the Wildean aphorism that there are times when it is more than a public duty to speak one’s mind- it becomes an absolute pleasure.

The only time I came across the leader of the BNP was following the 2006 City Council Elections when I was helping out Jean Bowers in Birches Head. I went to the Wheatsheaf Pub in Stoke afterwards before the count with my brother. The pub was full of BNP supporters who were expecting big gains in the elections- they were to be disappointed. Sitting at a table enjoying a meal was the leader of the BNP surrounded by muscular, shaven headed men in suits. Griffin was eating a curry.

If you’ve read this blog for a while you will know by now that I am no fan of the BNP. Don’t get me wrong I would fight for their right to exist and for your right to vote for them. That is what makes our country great, a democracy built on the principles of free speech.

Companies will have a second opportunity to tender for the demolition of former Victorian Workhouse Westcliffe Hospital following an announcement by Cllr Brian Ward. As no contract has been awarded, the tendering process is only expected to take a matter of weeks and as such will not hold up the development. Deputy Council Leader Brian Wards announcement has been welcomed by Cllr Alan Rigby and Stoke South MP Rob Flello.
