£1m Big Lottery Grant To Benefit Great Chell, Fegg Hayes and Chell Heath.

Residents in Great Chell, Fegg Hayes and Chell Heath will decide on how over £1m will be spent in their area.

The money comes from a grant from the Big Lottery Fund, Big Local, after 12 months of work to secure the funding by Stoke-on-Trent’s Local Strategic Partnership.

The criteria for the award was that the natural area had to have a population of between 3,000- 10,000 people, in an area of disadvantage and deprivation where a large proportion of the population were earning £15,000 or less per year.

The LSP was asked to identify areas that fit into this category and they sought an area that had received little financial assistance in the form of grants or regeneration funds in the past. Of several areas highlighted, the Big Lottery Fund eventually decided on Great Chell, Fegg Hayes and Chell Heath.

As a result, in June 2010, representatives from the Big Lottery Fund came to the city and met with representatives of the city council, the LSP, residents associations and the city’s Youth Council to decide on the suitability of the area, and the funding was offered and accepted.

City council leader Councillor Mohammed Pervez said:

Quote:
“This is tremendously good news for the residents of these three areas – and most importantly, they will decide how the cash will be spent.”

“The key to a project like this succeeding is partnership work. Ourselves, the Residents Associations and the Big Lottery have all had to work together to identify what was unique about these areas in order that the funding was secured.

“Great Chell, Fegg Hayes and Chell Heath are areas that haven’t seen the benefits of investment in the past, but now this funding will enable work to start on changing these areas, according to what the residents want.”

The Big Lottery is in the process of tendering out the work to a Charitable Trust to run the project nationally, which should take around 12 months to complete.

Jim Gibson, Chair of the Chell Heath Residents Association, said:

Quote:
“It’s about time that the peripheral estates, particularly in the northern part of the city got some attention as they always seem to miss out. It’s positive news which can hopefully uplift the whole area.”

John Taylor, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the West Midlands, said:

Quote:
“The Big Local Trust is a dedicated Lottery funding stream to help people in places such as Chell Heath and Fegg Hayes to identify local issues and to develop the skills and confidence necessary to change things for the better.

“We hope that by securing funding for the long-term and by offering a commitment to providing dedicated local support, the Big Local Trust will bring lasting positive changes to Chell Heath and Fegg Hayes and their residents.”

£57,776 for a new park.
Money for new block paving drives.
But they they have not had anything.
These three areas along with Abbey Hulton, Meir, Bentilee and Bucknall have had moey thrown at them while Tunstall yet again gets nothing.
Will someone please tell me the last time funding was given to Tunstall Sandyford, and GoldenHill.

Hmm - so what plans are in

Hmm - so what plans are in the pipeline ?
After last Winter grit bins ( with actual grit in them) would be a good start.
Something to bring some employment in would be nice too - seem to hear a lot about the units at Chatterley Whitfield but there's never any jobs going.

Terry - if you mean the latest round of driveways - I have to admit that was my idea ( or, more likely, I was one of the ones who suggested it)- I threw it in at the consultation over the state of the roads - some of the ideas they had would have caused riots among neighbours with people unable to park. Must admit I was surprised when they turned out to be block paving them all though, I expected dropped kerbs and tarmac.

Tunstall recieved Capital

Tunstall recieved Capital Challenge 1996, was supposed to get Neighbourhood renewal around 2002, but believe got sucked into the WHOLE RENEW programme who classed Tunstall as sustainable.

As RA do you get all funding memo that are sent out, read them all and work with Council to bid for as many as you can. I don't think Chell was going to be included in the National Lottery bid until Local Councillors pushed for it pushed for it?

Why does the rest of the city

Why does the rest of the city have to keep bailing these estates out? We have a hard enough time as it is without paying for the upkeep of people who can't be arsed to contribute anything.

I lived in Fegg Hayes in the 80's. We used to joke that a Russian nuclear bomb would cause millions of pounds worth of improvements.

It's a tiny working-class outpost - any surprise it gets nowt?

Family members lived in Fegg

Family members lived in Fegg Hayes from the 50s to the 70s. Eventually they was forced out when their house was attacked in 74 after a IRA outrage, my family member was from Ireland.

In 2002 I worked on a neighbourhood conflict case where some of the community turned against a young woman who moved into the area. The main problem they had with her was that she came from Macclesfield. " What is she doing around here" seemed to be a common refrain.

I hope they spend the money well and spend it on job creation and skill training. They are going to be the priorities or at least it seems to me.

Knowing your clan well Bill,

Knowing your clan well Bill, I've always had you marked as lefty n'er do wells - but potential car bombers?

Fully get what you are saying about the hostility. Who was it said : if a man's not a socialist by the time he's 20 there's something wrong with his heart, if he's still a socialist by the time he's 40 there's something wrong with his head?

They don't make it easy, do they bud?

As you say... hope this filthy lucre goes somewhere useful.

I'm genuinely struggling to

I'm genuinely struggling to think what it can reasonably be spent on.
We have the new community centre, traffic calming, parks, fencing, landscaping and drives have been done.
Presumably they need someone with more imagination than me - hopefully it won't be blown on some pie-in-the-sky faddiness.
As for skills training - my daughter phoned several times about a course that was offered at Chatterley Whitfield, left messages on the answer machine and it took them 3 months to get back to her - then they told her the certificate for the course costs £290. Not really helpful in the circumstances.
