Improvements To Be Made To Road For New Sixth Form College

Improvements to one of the city’s major road junctions is set to start next week as part of building work for the new sixth form college.

The work to the traffic signals at the junction of Leek Road, Station Road and Glebe Street will start on Monday July 19 and will last for approximately six weeks. The work will involve minor alterations to pedestrian islands and the traffic signals to help accommodate the new sixth form college, which is due to open in September 2010.

Councillor Brian Ward, cabinet member for housing, planning and transportation, said:

Quote:
“Due to the high volume of traffic we already get around that junction it is vital that we make it safe for both motorists and pedestrians when the college opens.

“Although every effort will be made to keep delays and disruption to a minimum there will unavoidably be some delays to traffic. We are advising motorists to allow more time for their journey and use alternative routes where possible.”

The improvements are being funded by the Sixth Form College.

New college is a waste of tax

New college is a waste of tax payees money on epic proportions. 33 mil was it? When there's already a perfectly good college (that has a car park for students!) just down the road.

Yes the old college was

Yes the old college was perfectly good, but was too small for the number of students that attended it.

The old college grounds, I hear, are going to be used to extend Fenton Manor.

As for the car park the new college is on a main bus route where buses run every 10 minutes. It is next to the train station so students that travel from Stafford can get the train to college.

Most people can now use public transport to get to college, and before someone says it, yes I have used public transport, I use it everyday.

It is proposed that the

It is proposed that the existing fenton manor site will be where the new St. Peter's Academy will be built which amalgamates St. Peter's and Berry Hill (with them perhaps using the existing buildings before the new build is complete).

Also, although the existing college is okay, to even compete with the facilities at Newcastle the college needs a new build.

And, I agree about the bus route, it is actually a better location for the many students who get the bus.

Oh yeah, of course. I forgot about that, as I came from Newcastle way I always got the 25/6. Guess it will be a bit of a pain getting two buses.

Councillor Brian Ward, you've

Councillor Brian Ward, you've now completed the £750,000 junction improvements to Westport road and federation road, when can we expect work to start in Burslem to make use of this?

Yes it does depends on where

Yes it does depends on where you come from and as an ex student of the college I know that getting the bus to college was difficult. If you come from the Stafford, Newcastle, Bignall End, or Hanley area you have to switch to onto a bus which it not as regular as the 25 bus route.

Students come from all of these areas to go to Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form.

Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form is already lossing custom because of the new college at Newcastle, as Rebecca says it needed a new building to compete.

Leek Road is awful to drive

Leek Road is awful to drive down, for some reason full of cars wanting to jump out of side streets in front of you.

As a parent I'm glad that pedestrian safety is to be maximised.

Bus from Trentham not too bad in terms of route. Previously was bus to Stoke then a shortish walk to the old college at Fenton. Now easier, bus to Stoke and shorter walk to college.

In terms of price however bus is horrendous. For year 2009-10 annual bus pass for sixth form college student cost £235. For year 2010-11 it's £300!
