Hanley Community Fire Station Official Opening Today

Hanley Community Fire Station will be officially opened by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire, Sir James Hawley KCVO today.

As part of the officially opening ceremony, the four men who came to the aid of neighbours during a house fire in Bentilee, Stoke-on-Trent in December last year will also receive Chief Fire Officer bravery awards (see notes to editor).
Between them, the men rescued Christopher Maskery and four children from the burning property and will each receive certificates from Chief Fire Officer, Peter Dartford on Friday, October 28th.

The official opening of Hanley Community Fire Station ceremony seemed a fitting time to award the brave members of the community who helped save the lives of others during the tragic house fire on Housefield Road in December last year.

All four men acted with astonishing bravery that day and their main concern was not for their own safety but for the safety of their neighbours and that is not something we could overlook.

This station is not simply a brighter, shinier version of what we already had here”“ this is truly a community facility that happens to have fire engines parked in the bays ““ something that local people are using for a range of activities.

We are extremely proud of the new station and more importantly what it means to the communities we serve. This building represents a completely new way for our services to be delivered and provides a model for others to follow in the future.

We’re delighted to welcome the Lord Lieutenant to officially open the station in a ceremony that is set to capture the community spirit evident in Stoke-on-Trent.

Firefighters moved into the new community fire station, which comes complete with state of the art training and professional development facilities, in July. The building has been designed to provide a range of facilities for the local community and partners to use, including a community meeting room, a dedicated area for student firefighters, a gym for supervised groups and a partnership area. The station is crewed around the clock and 41 firefighters are based at the station.

New No Cold Call Zone to keep residents safe

Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue are once again joining forces in Stoke-on-Trent to help the elderly and vulnerable ward off suspicious callers at their door.

Residents in Brindley Ford are being encouraged to step up security at their homes as a “ËœNo Cold Calling Zone’ is launched in the area on Wednesday 9 February.

Neighbourhood police officers, city council neighbourhood and trading standards officers and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have worked together to set the scheme up.

Those residents living in Handley Drive, Patrick Place, Finch Place, Lally Place, Hugh Bourne Place and Beatrice Walk are set to benefit from the new scheme – which is the second to be launched in the city so far this year.

Visitors to the No Cold Calling Zone will see street signs on lamp posts to warn traders, and residents will also be provided with information packs, letters and a door/window sticker to display.

“These particular streets in Brindley Ford are mainly populated with elderly and vulnerable residents.

“Due to this the area would greatly benefit from a No Cold Calling Zone. Myself and colleagues from partner agencies completed questionnaires in the area and more than 60 per cent of the residents agreed the community would benefit from the scheme.

“The aim of the No Cold Calling Zones is to deter cold callers and rogue traders from operating in the area, which will protect and reassure our more vulnerable residents.

“Previous No Cold Calling Zones across the city have been well received by members of the community. Anything which reduces crime and the fear of crime in our communities is to be welcomed.”

“No Cold Calling Zones have been successfully used in other parts of Stoke-on-Trent to reduce the levels of distraction burglary and rogue trading and to reduce the fear of crime, particularly amongst elderly and other vulnerable groups.

“They also discourage rogue traders who target vulnerable residents falsely claiming that work needs doing and then charging exorbitant prices for shoddy and unnecessary work.

“The zones will also discourage those who use door step selling as the opening for distraction burglaries or to make plans for future burglaries.”

Big Conversation Set To Inspire Stoke-on-Trent Employers On Work Experience

Young people from Stoke-on-Trent schools are set to benefit from the wisdom and experience of local business leaders as part of Business in the Community’s national Work Inspiration campaign.

On Tuesday, 23 November, 50 pupils will be at the King’s Hall, in Kingsway, Stoke, to talk to more than 60 senior business representatives from across the city about the benefits of work experience.

The Work Inspiration campaign, which has seen Big Conversation events held across the country, has been developed to encourage businesses of all sizes and types, across all sectors, to commit to improving and expanding the work experience they offer in order to bridge the gap between the classroom and the world of work.

The Stoke-on-Trent event is being hosted by Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Chief Executive John van de Laarschot, Sinead Butters, Chief Executive of Aspire Housing Group and David Darlaston, Regional Director of Business in the Community.

They will be joined by chief executives and senior officers from across North Staffordshire, including, Johnson Tiles, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, Stoke City Football Club and Kier Group, to discuss with students about how to create worthwhile and beneficial work experience placements.

“The younger generation are the city’s future employees and employers so it is important we invest time and effort to help shape their career paths. The Big Conversation gives young people the chance to talk to business leaders about how they developed their careers. It also allows us to think as a business how we provide work experience opportunities and whether what we offer could be improved. It is a great opportunity for our city’s young people and business leaders to unite in shaping the students of this city’s future career paths.”

During the day long event young people, aged between 15 and 18, will be given the opportunity to talk on a one to one basis with chief executives and business leaders about their experiences and careers. It will provide students with the unique opportunity to quiz business leaders on how they got to where they are today while also giving both parties the opportunity to review the benefits of work experience in business.

The Big Conversation is the first step a of crucial dialogue between young people and business, and in doing so will help the business to better understand how they can meet the ambition of young people, and provide the best possible work experience.”

Hard Hitting Campaign Is Launched

A hard hitting campaign which aims to keep young people safe during the Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations has today been launched.

The high profile initiative has a very clear message – take care and be aware.

A range of leading organisations from across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent have joined forces to spearhead the campaign including:

* Staffordshire County Council

* Cannock Chase Council

* Staffordshire Police

* Staffordshire Fire and Rescue

* East Staffordshire Borough Council

* South Staffordshire District Council

* Stoke City Council to run the initiative

The aim of the scheme is to help youngsters stay safe and keep out of trouble while the festivities are taking place.

“Halloween and Bonfire Night can be lots of fun but they can also be quite frightening for vulnerable and older people.

“We want everyone to enjoy themselves during the celebrations – that’s why a range of leading organisations have joined forces to launch this high profile campaign. The message is strong and simple – take care and be aware.”

“While this time of year is about recognising and celebrating history, it is important to remember that fireworks, although fun to watch, can cause serious injury and damage if not used safely.

“This can have a devastating effect on people’s lives and futures. Operation Good Guy is a timely reminder to children and young people to think about the dangers of fireworks in the hope they can develop a healthy respect for fireworks and be safe at all times.”

“We’re working closely with partners to continue to reduce crime and anti social behaviour across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent.

“We want families to enjoy themselves safely and responsibly this Halloween and Bonfire Night, and would urge parents to keep a close eye on their children.”

The first part of the project ““ Be aware of who you scare ““ will see eye catching posters pinned up in youth centres, community buildings, schools and shops.

Leaflets will be available, radio adverts will be aired and an ad van will be driving the message home to children across the area.

Vulnerable people are also being given “ËœNo Trick or Treat’ cards to display in their windows.

The second part of the campaign ““ Operation Good Guy ““ is being led by Staffordshire’s Trading Standards team and Staffordshire Fire Rescue Service.

Trading Standards officers will be visiting licensed shops to offer advice and guidance about the sale of fireworks to children under 18 as well as working to tackle the illegal use of fireworks.

Firefighters will be delivering a presentation to pupils to highlight how dangerous fireworks can be when in the wrong hands.

A special Firework Hotline has been set up to answer any legal questions that residents have about Bonfire Night and, for the first time ever, they can also call the number if they have a query about anti social behaviour.
